Some of the above cards come with pre-set amounts (e.g., $5, $50, $100), while others leave the amount up to the purchaser.

For most gift cards, denominations of five are the norm, though sometimes you will see a card for one brand set with $25, then the next highest is $50.

For Walmart gift cards specifically, you can find a variety of different patterns and graphics – some to celebrate birthdays, others for weddings, major holidays, etc.

Walmart gift cards can be purchased in a set amount, or you can choose your amount in increments of $5.

The most you can put on a single Walmart gift card is $1,000, but if you need to give someone more, you can buy multiple cards.

However, bear in mind that each Walmart location’s stock will be different. While it’s likely each store will have many of the brands listed above, there’s no accounting for demand or the supply chain.

Of course, the best way to circumvent having to head to the store at all is to purchase your gift card online at Walmart.com, which is discussed in more detail below.

Does Walmart Sell Gift Cards For Other Companies?

Walmart sells gift cards for many other companies, though the company tends to stick to popular national or regional chains, rather than small, local businesses.

You can find numerous restaurants, apparel stores, sporting goods, home goods, amusement and entertainment, travel and transport, mobile plans, and more.

Additionally, Walmart carries prepaid debit/credit cards from financial giants like American Express, Visa, and Mastercard.

What Gift Cards Doesn’t Walmart Sell?

Another big brand missing from the above list is Target. Though Target represents much less of a threat than Amazon, they are still competing in the discount wares market with Walmart, thus accounting for their missing space on Walmart’s gift card rack.

Walmart also doesn’t carry grocery store gift cards, because grocery stores have been chasing after Walmart’s sales for years. In fact, Walmart holds an entire quarter of the total grocery market shares in the U.S.

As well, in areas where there is even less competition, Walmart could be the only grocery store for miles.

So, Walmart isn’t going to be selling gift cards to national chains like Kroger, Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Aldi, or more regional chains such as BJ’s, Wegmans, Giant Eagle, and Meijer’s.

Finally, one major disruptor in the grocery game, Instacart, is also not represented in the list of Walmart’s gift cards.

Not only does Instacart partner with many of Walmart’s grocery competitors, it partners with their retail competitors, too, like Target, Rite Aid, and Family Dollar.

Rather, Walmart wants customers to sign up for their Walmart+ membership program, which features same-day delivery from a local store.

Overall, Walmart isn’t likely to encourage people to stick with or turn to Instacart for same-day deliveries rather than the Walmart-brand delivery service.

Where Can You Buy Walmart Gift Cards?

You can purchase Walmart gift cards (or gift cards sold by Walmart) either in stores or online, depending on the card.

For in-store shopping, if you want to make sure that the card you seek is available, you can always search for it on Walmart’s website with the “Pickup” filter and your location turned on.

As well, you can purchase eGift cards on Walmart.com, which get emailed to the recipient, or you can buy physical gift cards online and have them shipped to you.

How Do Walmart E-gift Cards Work?

To purchase an E-gift card from Walmart, whether it’s a Walmart card or for a different retailer, you’ll navigate to Walmart’s gift card page.

If you scroll down the gift card page, you can find a subsection titled E-gift cards. Click on “Shop all” just to the upper right corner (aligned with the subheading). This method is the easiest for filtering card options so that just the digital ones are visible.

The site includes helpful filters at the top so that you can search by brand type, so if you know you want to buy a Netflix card, for example, you can click on “Entertainment eGift Cards.”

Or, if you’re not sure what you want, you can just scroll through the options.

Once you pick the card you want, pay close attention to whether there’s an “Options” button or an “+Add” button.

Options mean that there are several different amounts to choose from. The +Add button means that the price listed is the price you get, so if you want a different amount, keep looking.

For Walmart E-gift cards, you have the option to choose a background (or even an animation), plus enter the recipient’s email, name, and an optional note. Afterward, add it to your cart.

Once the card of your choice is in your cart, you can proceed to check-out (double-check that all the information is correct, especially the recipient’s email).

After you hit “Place Order,” Walmart will process the transaction. Afterward, when the money has gone through, your E-gift card will be on its way.

At check-out, you can either have the card sent to your email or send it to the recipient.

Does Walmart Buy Gift Cards?

In 2014, Walmart began partnering with CardCash to buy gift cards from over 200 different retailers and brands.

In return, customers receive a Walmart gift card worth the (depleted) value of the card they want to exchange.

So, for example, if you purchased a Starbucks gift card from Walmart but no longer want to give it away, you can “exchange” it for a Walmart gift card instead.

However, the gift cards are valued at a lesser rate than the amount on the card, so you won’t get the full balance.

Can You Get Cash Back From A Walmart Gift Card?

The leftover sum on a Walmart gift card cant be returned to the user in cash unless their state requires it.

These states include the following:

  • Colorado
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Texas
  • Vermont
  • Washington

However, if you don’t live in one of those states, then you can’t request the remaining balance of your Walmart gift card in cash and be guaranteed cashback.

It’s also worth noting that even if you do live in one of the states listed above, the amount might have to be under a certain threshold (like $10) for the cash return to be permitted.

Can You Return A Gift Card To Walmart?

Walmart, unfortunately, doesn’t accept returns on gift cards, no matter if it’s one of their own or a different brand.

So, when you go to purchase a gift card– especially in a large denomination – make sure it’s what you really want, otherwise, you could end up losing money.

However, if you bought a gift card from Walmart and no longer want it, you can try a few other avenues.

First, you can try to sell it for the exact amount on an online marketplace such as Facebook or Craigslist.

As well, you can trade cards in with sites like CardCash.com, though you will lose money from the transaction.

Ultimately, though Walmart accepts many different types of returns, gift cards are not among them. Therefore, be sure of your purchase before you buy a gift card at Walmart.

Can You Transfer Money From A Walmart Gift Card To Your Debit Card?

If you’ve received a Walmart gift card, or you have one you don’t want to use, transferring the money is not an option.

Sadly, though we’re told to “treat this gift card like cash,” it’s non-transferrable like cash, so you cannot move the balance to your checking account.

As well, you can’t purchase a prepaid Visa debit card with a Walmart gift card. While this would allow you to use the funds in many more locations, the purchase is prohibited.

To know more about Walmart, you can also read our posts on how to activate Walmart gift cards, if Walmart sells Victoria’s Secret gift cards, and also if Walmart sells Home Depot gift cards.

Conclusion

Walmart sells over 100 different branded gift cards from major retailers, restaurants and others, in a variety of denominations, and customers can make these purchases in-store or online.

While you can’t return a gift card to Walmart, the company does have a gift card purchase program, so you can trade in an unused card for a Walmart one.
