Is FedEx A Good Job In 2024?

78% of FedEx employees say it’s a great place to work, which is much higher than the national average of 57% as of 2024. Employees cite feeling welcomed and accomplished as two main contributors to their job satisfaction. FedEx jobs provide competitive pay, guaranteed hours, and benefits like health insurance, sick days, overtime, and paid time off (PTO).

There is a lot more to know about working at FedEx, so be sure to read the entire article!

Is FedEx A Good Job To Work?

When answering this question, it’s important to distinguish between working at FedEx Express and working at FedEx Ground.

With that, FedEx Express employees are employed by the FedEx Corporation, whereas FedEx Ground employees work for independent contractors.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that these two groups of employees have significantly different experiences when it comes to working at FedEx.

Indeed, jobs at FedEx Express offer good pay and a minimum of 36 hours of guaranteed work per week. Also, these jobs provide benefits and lots of room for advancement.

On the other hand, FedEx Ground offers fewer benefits and lower pay in most circumstances.

Is FedEx A Good Employer?

In general, employees consider FedEx to be a good employer. In fact, the company was ranked #100 on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For 2022.

Further, this list is based on survey feedback from more than 4.3 million employees across the United States.

In this survey, they rank their workplace culture on more than 60 elements, including trust in managers, compensation, fairness, and camaraderie.

In addition to official surveys, informal reviews on job review websites paint a similar picture.

For example, current employees describe the working relationship as “family-like” and full of team spirit.

Additionally, they praise the company’s career growth opportunities and FedEx’s commitment to hiring from the inside.

How Much Does FedEx Pay?

When looking for a job, one of the most important questions is, “how much does it pay?”

Unfortunately, with FedEx, it’s hard to give a clear answer because pay depends on many different factors.

For one, FedEx pays differently based on the location. So, one employee could be making $15 an hour at one location while another makes $22 doing the same job at a different location.

With that in mind, there’s a good chance that you’ll be on the lower end of that scale if you’re just starting out as a package handler.

Also, another thing that influences pay is whether an employee works for FedEx Express or Ground.

For example, FedEx Ground drivers usually make about $20 per hour, while FedEx Express drivers make between $19 and $24 per hour on average.

Are FedEx Benefits Good?

Are FedEx Benefits Good?

As with the question “Is FedEx a good place to work?” this question requires two separate answers for FedEx Express employees and FedEx Ground employees.

That said, benefits at FedEx Express include overtime, paid time off, sick time, 401k, and health and dental care.

On the other hand, FedEx Ground employees work for independent contractors, so benefits vary from company to company. However, in general, Ground has fewer benefits than Express.

Most notably, many FedEx Ground drivers don’t receive health benefits.

Is Working At FedEx Hard?

For most roles, FedEx is considered a very physically demanding job.

Indeed, many package handlers are quick to point out how physically demanding the job is.

This role, in particular, requires employees to be on their feet, lift heavy packages (up to 70 pounds), and keep up with the fast-paced environment.

Still, the work is basic and easy as long as you pay attention to detail and work at a steady pace.

Also, working as a driver can be very physically taxing, as it requires couriers to hop in and out of the truck dozens of times a day while carrying heavy packages.

Is FedEx A Good Starting Job?

Working a FedEx can be an excellent first job. With that, employees only need a high school diploma (or equivalent).

On top of that, getting hired is straightforward, and pay is relatively competitive (between $15 and $22 per hour).

Also, given the physical demands on the job, it might be a good fit for younger people who enjoy being physically active and who don’t tire quickly.

Is It Easy To Get Hired At FedEx?

Thanks to the rise of eCommerce and the massive volume of packages that come with it, FedEx often struggles to hire enough employees to keep up with the demand.

As such, the company is hiring constantly, both at Ground and Express. In fact, some hubs may even hire on the spot.

That said, there are some requirements to keep in mind when applying; below is a list of the requirements for package handlers:

  • High School degree or equivalent
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to be a team player
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds (32kg)
  • Ability to work variable shifts, including weekends and holidays if needed

Additionally, delivery drivers must meet all of these requirements and have a driver’s license in good standing and pass mandatory training.

For all positions, applicants must pass a basic assessment test, complete an over-the-phone interview, finish a physical test, and submit to a background check (and drug test, if applicable).

Overall, this entire process can be done in just a few days, but usually, it lasts about two weeks.

Is It Worth It To Work At FedEx?

While all of this information about working at FedEx may be helpful, it may not help potential applicants decide whether or not working at FedEx is worth it.

All things considered, FedEx is a good company to work for (especially roles at FedEx Express).

With that, benefits and pay are reasonable, and moving up is encouraged by management. Also, working hours are stable, and you’ll never run out of things to do.

Still, it’s important to remember that most roles are fast-paced and physically demanding.

So, if you prefer sitting in front of a computer or have health challenges, this is likely not the job for you.

Conclusion

Thanks to the excellent pay and benefits, most current employees consider FedEx a good job.

What’s more, the company is committed to hiring from the inside and provides plenty of training opportunities to help employees move up in their careers.

In general, insiders favor FedEx Express jobs over FedEx Ground jobs.

Further, Express jobs provide better benefits and more consistent hours, while Ground jobs largely depend on the specific contractor.
