Gift Cards from Walmart can be useful presents to give to friends and family because of the wide range of items Walmart sells.
However, some people do not shop at Walmart or feel the need to return the gift card. This may make you wonder: can you return gift cards to Walmart?
Here is everything I’ve found out by contacting Walmart customer service!
Can You Return Gift Cards To Walmart?
Unfortunately, you cannot return any Walmart or third-party gift cards back to Walmart, according to its official returns policy. However, in some states such as California and Colorado, you can get a partial refund in cash if the remaining balance on the gift card is low.
If you want to know more about the states that allow you to get partial refunds, and how to return third-party gift cards bought from Walmart, keep on reading!
Can You Cash Your Walmart Gift Card If The Balance Is Low?
Although Walmart does not allow gift card returns at any of its stores based on its official policy, some states require retail stores to refund the customer in cash if the balance is very low.
Therefore, if you live in any of the following states, you can head over to a nearby Walmart store if your gift card balance is low and ask to receive cash for the amount left. Here is the list of states:
- California
- Montana
- Rhode Island
- Texas
- Massachusetts
- Vermont
- Washington
- Puerto Rico
- Colorado
- Maine
- New Jersey
- Oregon
There is no set value below which Walmart will refund the amount to you in cash, so it is best to contact your nearby Walmart store and ask them about the limit they follow.
You can get the contact numbers of nearby stores through the Walmart Store Finder.
Can You Return Third-Party Gift Cards To Walmart?
No, you cannot return third-party gift cards to any Walmart store. However, you may be able to return the gift card to the individual business itself.
For example, if you bought a gift card for another store or brand (e.g. Apple or Starbucks) from Walmart, you may be able to return the card directly to that store instead of Walmart.
To find out if the business will accept the gift card for a return, you can contact the business directly and ask them about their policy regarding gift card returns.
Walmart Does Buy Back Non-Walmart Branded Gift Cards
While you cannot return gift cards back to Walmart, they do have a gift card buyback system that allows customers to return a third-party gift card (eg Starbucks, eBay, Kroger, etc) and exchange it for a Walmart gift card.

Conclusion
Unfortunately, you cannot return any gift cards to Walmart, according to its official policy on returns of items.
Even though Walmart does not return its gift cards, in some states such as California, Colorado, New Jersey, and Oregon, Walmart is required by law to refund the customer in cash if the remaining balance on the gift card is very low.
If you want to return a third-party gift card, you can contact the individual business (where you would use the gift card) and ask them if they can accept it directly.
