IKEA’s lamp collection is varied and expansive, making the retailer a popular choice for lighting as they sell both the fixtures and the bulbs.
I wondered whether, like with other IKEA products, IKEA lamps were only compatible with IKEA bulbs. Here is what I’ve managed to find out!
Do IKEA Lamps Need IKEA Bulbs?
IKEA lamps work best with the bulbs offered by IKEA. However, IKEA lamps can be used with bulbs sold by other retailers like Walmart. IKEA lamps use standard bases, though it is recommended that all IKEA lamps are fitted with LED bulbs. Nevertheless, if it is safe, IKEA lamps can be fitted with non-LED and non-IKEA bulbs.
To learn more, I also cover which non-IKEA bulbs can be used in place of IKEA bulbs, what kind of lightbulbs IKEA uses, and whether IKEA bulbs are considered good!
What Regular Bulbs Can I Use In Place Of IKEA Bulbs?
There are plenty of options when it comes to regular, non-IKEA bulbs to fit IKEA lamps. These include:
- IKEA E17 and IKEA E26 bulbs can be replaced with bulbs sold at Walmart, Home Depot, and Target.
- IKEA E12 and IKEA 14 bulb equivalents are available at Walmart, Home Depot, and Amazon.
- IKEA E27 bulbs can be substituted for bulbs sold at Walmart, Home Depot, and Amazon.

What Kind Of Lightbulbs Does IKEA Use?
IKEA only offers LED lightbulbs as of 2015.
The retailer made the switch after deciding that LED technology had progressed enough and was affordable to offer to their customers as their sole option.
Are IKEA Bulbs Good?
IKEA’s affordable LED options are considered good quality, with reviewers noting they do not feel cheap.
Additionally, IKEA customers have also found that IKEA LED bulbs are long-lasting, are very energy efficient, and have ample brightness.
How Long Do IKEA Bulbs Last?
Since all IKEA bulbs are all LEDs, they last incredibly long. In most cases, LED bulbs can last up to 50,000 hours, making them a much better option in comparison to other bulb types.
However, everything from usage per day, electrical stress, and surrounding temperatures can affect the lifespan of an LED bulb, and while most will last as long as the manufacturer states, some may not.
Are IKEA Bulbs Energy-Efficient?
As all IKEA bulbs are LED bulbs, they will save on energy costs.
According to IKEA, their light bulbs save up to 85% of energy compared with other bulb types.
IKEA lamps do not need IKEA bulbs, however, it is recommended that you use IKEA bulbs with them. Plenty of big box stores and online retailers offer bulbs that are compatible with IKEA lamps.
IKEA only offers LED bulbs after making the switch to 100% LED in 2015. LED bulbs are energy-efficient, affordable, and will save you money.
IKEA bulbs are long-lasting, though their lifespan is dependent on outside factors, including room temperature and electrical stress.
