Can You Pay for DoorDash Orders with Cash?
Currently, you cannot pay for DoorDash orders with cash, because the food delivery service wants to avoid any unnecessary contact between delivery drivers and customers.
That said, DoorDash suspended its Cash on Delivery payment method in 2020 for Marketplace and Drive orders.
However, customers used to be able to pay for DoorDash orders with cash in the past by selecting “Cash” as their payment method on the mobile app.
Then, after the DoorDasher collected the cash payment, the amount was deducted from their next balance transfer.
How Do Cash Payments Through DoorDash Orders Work?
When DoorDashers were able to accept cash for deliveries, DoorDash would inform the driver that it was a “Cash on Delivery” order.
After receiving the notification, a DoorDasher had the choice to accept or decline the order without their decision affecting their acceptance rate.
Then, when the DoorDasher delivered the food, they collected the cash payment from the customer.
That said, the cash a DoorDash delivery driver collected was theirs to keep, and the amount was deducted from their next scheduled direct deposit transfer.
What Happened If Your DoorDasher Didn’t Have Enough Change?
When DoorDash allowed cash payments, there were procedures to handle situations where delivery drivers didn’t have enough change when accepting the order.
That said, when a DoorDasher didn’t have enough change, they still gave the customer the order. However, the DoorDasher wasn’t allowed to collect the payment upon delivery.
Instead, they had to select “Issue Collecting Cash Payment” in the Dasher mobile app and indicate that they didn’t have enough change.
Then, DoorDash would pay the delivery driver the base pay for the order, and their Completion Rating was not affected.
Why Did DoorDash Suspend Cash Payments?
DoorDash suspended cash payments during 2020 to promote contactless deliveries and prevent unnecessary germ spreading.
That said, once DoorDash stopped cash payments, the company decided to do so indefinitely.
So far, there has been no new information on whether or not DoorDash will bring back the Cash on Delivery feature.
Can You Tip Your DoorDasher with Cash?
Even though you can’t pay for DoorDash orders with cash, you can still tip your delivery driver with cash.
That said, you can either hand the cash tip to your DoorDasher in person, or you can leave the cash where they can see it while dropping off your food.
According to DoorDashers, it’s best to tip via your contactless payment, because delivery drivers can see how much they’ll earn per order.
Because DoorDashers can’t see how much a cash tip will be, the order will be less likely to be retrieved.
Can You Pay Cash for DoorDash Drive Orders?
You cannot pay for DoorDash Drive orders with cash.
DoorDash Drive orders are large orders or catering gigs that involve special handling, and can only be delivered by Experienced Dashers.
Additionally, some DoorDash Drive orders involve light setup once the delivery driver arrives at the customer’s location.
Further, Experienced Dashers are delivery drivers that have qualified to sign up for large order delivery opportunities.
What Are the Acceptable Payment Methods at DoorDash?
Although you currently cannot pay for DoorDash orders with cash, the food delivery service accepts a wide range of payment methods.
For example, some of the ways you can pay for DoorDash orders include the following payment methods:
- Google Pay
- Apple Pay
- DoorDash gift cards
- Debit card (Visa, MasterCard, etc.)
- Credit card (Discover, American Express, etc.)
Also, you can save multiple payment methods onto your account at one time, and switch the way you pay whenever you want.
How Do You Change Your Default Payment on DoorDash?
If you want to change your default payment connected to your DoorDash account, it’s easy to do so on the mobile app or desktop site. First, you’ll have to sign in to your DoorDash account.
If you have the mobile app, you’ll already be logged into your account. However, if you use DoorDash’s desktop feature, you’ll be required to sign in before placing an order.
Then, follow these steps to change your default payment methods on DoorDash:
- Find the menu on the top left-hand side of your screen
- Click on the three lines to open the menu
- Select “Payment” on iOS or “Payment Method” on Android
- Choose the option to add a new payment method
- Add a new card or payment method
If you’re using a desktop to alter your settings, you’ll have to click on the three dots to the right of the given payment option and select “Set Default.”
On the other hand, click on the payment method of choice, and set it as your default payment when using the app.
Moreover, when you see the checkmark to the right of the payment method, you’ll know the changes are confirmed.
Currently, DoorDash no longer accepts cash payments for deliveries. That said, DoorDash suspended its “Cash on Delivery” service during 2020.
