IKEA Returns Without Receipt (All You Need To Know)

Like most major retailers, IKEA will happily provide you with a refund if you decide to return any of your purchases.

This usually requires that you bring your receipt though – which can be a problem if you’ve lost it. So what happens if you try to return an item to IKEA without a receipt? Here is what I discovered!

IKEA Returns Without Receipt?

Usually, IKEA does require a receipt for returns, but in some cases, you might not need one. If the item is clearly faulty, then you may not need to produce a receipt to return it. You may also be able to provide other proof of purchase such as the credit card or debit card you used to buy the product.

Want to know more about how to return IKEA items without needing a receipt? Here’s what you need to know.

How do I return faulty IKEA items without a receipt?

If you are returning the item because it is faulty, then IKEA may not require a receipt at all, especially if you want a replacement instead of a refund.

Bring the faulty item to your local store’s returns department and if they’re satisfied the item is faulty, you’ll usually be offered a full refund or exchange.

Will IKEA accept proof other than a receipt for a return?

If you are able to provide another form of proof of purchase, then IKEA may accept this instead of a receipt and agree to a refund. Possible proof includes:

  • The credit card you used to buy the product
  • A bank statement showing the transaction
  • An order number if you bought the product online
  • A gift card number if you used a gift card to pay for the item

If you are unsure of what payment you may have made your purchase with, you can see IKEA’s full list of payment methods which may narrow it down.

What can I do if IKEA refuses to refund an item without a receipt?

Instead of a cash or credit card refund, you can instead request that IKEA takes back your item in return for store credit.

This isn’t guaranteed to work, and if it does you may not get a full refund, as IKEA will value the item at its lowest selling price from the past 365 days.

How long do I have to return IKEA items without a receipt?

The return window for IKEA items is the same with or without a receipt – you have 365 days to return new and unopened products, or 180 days to return opened products.

However, you won’t be able to return the product at all if it is found to be modified from its original form.

If I can’t get a refund without a receipt, does IKEA have a buy-back scheme?

IKEA has started a buy-back program where they will pay customers for their old furniture at a reduced price in several European countries.

This scheme is not yet available in the US, but it may become an option in the future for when you want to return items without a receipt.

Conclusion

Even without an IKEA receipt it’s still possible to get a return. If your item is faulty, you may be able to get a refund or replacement even without a receipt. You can also provide other proof of purchase instead of a receipt, or you may be able to request store credit in place of a cash or credit card refund.
