What Is A Super Target? (How Many Stores, Locations + More)

Having established more than 1,900 stores across the U.S., Target has begun transforming some of its stores into “Super Targets” to satisfy the needs of its customers.

So if you’re a regular Target customer, you may be wondering – what is a Super Target, and how is it different from a normal Target store? Here is what I’ve found through my research!

What Is A Super Target?

A Super Target is a larger version of the traditional Target store, which often has larger square footage and stocks a wider selection of products. Super Targets also offer other facilities such as a grocery section, an on-site bakery, and a deli counter, offering customers a better shopping experience.

If you want to learn more about which states contain Super Targets, when the first Super Target opened, and much more, keep reading!

Which States Have Super Targets?

Several states in the United States feature Super Target stores along with regular Target stores, including:

  • Alabama
  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • North Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Minnesota

How Many Super Targets Are There?

According to several reports, 239 Super Target stores are in selected states, making up just under 13% of total Target stores across the country.

Note that many Super Target stores offer products and amenities unavailable in regular Target stores.

What Is The Difference Between Target And Super Target?

A Super Target store is much bigger than a regular Target store and offers a more diverse range of products, including expansions of traditional Target aisles such as grocery.

Along with that, Super Target stores may feature amenities such as delis with a wider variety of meat on sale for customers.

Customers have noted that there are more products available generally than in regular Target stores, even if the products are not necessarily different from those at regular Target stores.

How Big Is A Super Target?

How Big Is A Super Target?

Super Target stores are named for their size, as they are often much larger than regular Target stores, so they can stock a greater amount of items.

On average, regular Target stores are often sized at around 130,000 square feet, whereas Super Target stores are sized at around 175,000 square feet and more.

Super Target stores also often feature double doors at the entrance, making them more accessible to the larger number of customers they anticipate shopping in stores.

What Is Inside A Super Target?

Shoppers report that Super Targets are similar to regular Target stores, and many of the aisles and products at Super Target are the same as Target, but with more variety.

Additionally, Super Target stores feature facilities such as an on-site bakery providing freshly baked produce and a deli to allow customers to select from a wider variety of meat.

Customers have noted that Super Target specializes in providing a diverse selection of meat.

When Did The First Super Target Open?

The first Super Target store was opened in 1995 in Omaha, Nebraska, and was created to be the same size as a Target Greatland store but with a wider variety of produce.

This was also the first time Target offered fresh food in stores, including Deli items, meat, and fresh produce like fruit and vegetables.

Super Target stores also offered facilities for customers, such as banks and photo studios, and expanded their restaurant and dining options for shoppers.

Other than that, some Super Target stores also featured health clinics where customers could purchase medication.

Until these features were brought to regular Target stores as well, Super Targets were the only places to find Target favorites in larger quantities with the addition of groceries.

What Is The Largest Super Target Store?

The largest Super Target store is located in Hoover, Alabama, and is approximately 191,000 square feet, i.e., almost 4.5 acres.

Additionally, the largest Target store in the world is located in Annapolis, Maryland, and has a size of 204,000 square feet, which is almost twice the size of a regular Target store.

On the other end, the smallest Target store in the world is a small-format store in Chicago, located at Wicker Park.

The size of this store is approximately 12,800 square feet, which is just shy of 16 times smaller than the largest Target store.

Does Super Target Still Exist?

While there are still Target stores displaying the Super Target logo and branding, Target has rebranded its stores, so they are all “Target” instead of being distinguished in any way.

In a 2015 statement, Target announced altering its stores to lose the Super Target branding, declaring ‘‘big or small, our stores have one thing in common: They’re all Target”.

Note that the unifying rebranding of Target also means that they no longer build Super Target stores and instead continue to expand with the regular Target branding.
