Picking the right sofa for your home can be an incredibly difficult task because you have to consider how all the other elements such as the color of the walls fit in with the sofa’s design.
So what happens if you buy a sofa from IKEA but decide that it is not right for you? Here is everything I’ve found through my research about IKEA’s sofa return policy!
IKEA Sofa Return Policy
IKEA accepts returns of unopened sofas within a year of purchase. Opened sofas can be returned in unused and re-sellable condition within 180 days of purchase with a valid ID and receipt. You will only get store credit if you return sofas without the original packaging.

How Can You Return Sofas To IKEA?
You can return a sofa to IKEA by bringing it in unopened condition with the original packaging, a valid government-issued photo ID, and the original receipt through IKEA’s Exchanges & Returns entrance.
Once there, IKEA staff will inspect the sofa and process your refund via the same method of payment you used to make the purchase.
Since sofas can be difficult to transport yourself, IKEA also offers a pick-up service you can use to have your sofa delivered to IKEA for a return or exchange.
You can make use of this pick-up service by contacting 888-888-4532 and explaining your address. Note that you may need to pay a small fee for the pick-up service.
Can You Return A Sofa To IKEA Without A Receipt?
Although it is best that you have the original receipt when returning a sofa to IKEA, there are some other ways that you can show proof of purchase in case you have lost the receipt.
For example, if the sofa was purchased online, you can use the order number that was emailed to you. Staff at IKEA will be able to search this order number in their store database to find the transaction.
You can use the same method for gift cards, i.e. if you have the original gift card, you can bring it to the IKEA store where staff will be able to track the authenticity and date of purchase.
Additionally, IKEA has also been known to accept evidence of purchases from screenshots of credit statements and bank transfers.
So as long as you can provide proof via these methods, you will be able to return your sofas to IKEA without the receipt.
Can You Return Used Sofas To IKEA?
Unfortunately, IKEA does not provide refunds or exchanges for any used items, including sofas.
This includes any sofas that have been altered from their original design, have signs of damage and wear and tear, or are stained and dirty.
Note that if you have opened the sofa from its packaging and it is still in its original condition, IKEA will accept a refund or exchange for that sofa within 180 days of purchase (with the original receipt).
The returns staff at IKEA has the final say on whether an item will be accepted for a return or not, so your actual experience of returning opened or used sofas will vary from store to store.
Can You Return Damaged Sofas To IKEA?
You cannot return or exchange a sofa that has been damaged under your possession for IKEA.
However, if the sofa was damaged (or had defects) when you first bought it from IKEA or received the delivery, you will be able to return or exchange the item.
Can You Return An Assembled Sofa To IKEA?
If you have already assembled the IKEA sofa that you wish to return, the sofa must be unused and in a re-sellable condition for IKEA to accept its return.
You will receive a full refund as long as you have proof of purchase and valid government-issued photo identification, and you are returning the sofa within 180 days of the initial purchase.
Can You Return A Sofa To IKEA Without The Original Packaging?
You can return an IKEA sofa without the original packaging as long as it is unused and in a re-sellable condition, however, you will most likely be refunded in the form of store credit.
Additionally, you must have proof of purchase when making the return and should be doing so within the 180-day return window for opened items.
Does IKEA Replace Broken Parts?
IKEA will replace broken parts from any orders purchased (including for sofas).
If you come across a broken part in your delivery, you can either take the entire item back to IKEA for a refund and exchange, or you can exchange just the individual broken part.
Can IKEA Look Up Your Receipt?
If you paid using a credit or debit card, staff at IKEA will be able to look up your receipt but it will need the last four digits of your payment card as well as the date of the initial transaction.
IKEA will use this information to search its database to try and locate your receipt information.
