Is Dollar General Owned By Walmart? [Who Really Owns Dollar General?]

Dollar General currently operates over 16,000 stores across the country, offering low prices on well-known brands for their millions of everyday customers.

However, you may be wondering if Dollar General operates independently or if it is owned by a larger company such as Walmart. Here is what I have managed to find out.

Is Dollar General Owned By Walmart?

No, Dollar General is not owned or never has been owned by Walmart. Dollar General is also not owned by any specific large grocery chains but is instead owned by private equity investors, including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Citigroup. Public stock investors also own dollar General as they are a publicly-traded company.

To learn more about who owns Dollar General and if they own any stores themselves, keep on reading!

Who Owns Dollar General?

Founded in 1939, Dollar General was originally owned by James Luther Turner and Cal Turner.

However, in 2007, Dollar General was acquired by a private equity firm that comprises affiliates from Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, GS Capital Partners, and Citigroup Private Equity.

Today, Dollar General is owned by these same investors plus public shareholders who can buy the stock on the NYSE.

Are Any Stores Or Companies Owned By Dollar General?

Dollar General does not currently own any widely recognized brands or companies.

However, Dollar General does operate a number of self-owned brands which sell products in Dollar General stores, such as Sweet Smiles Candy, and Clover Valley Water Bottles.

Dollar General did purchase, in 2016, 41 former Walmart Express locations, with designs towards turning them into Dollar General stores.

Do Dollar General Own The PopShelf Brand?

Yes. As part of a new business venture, the Dollar General Corporation has opened a new brand known as PopShelf.

This brand is focused on a more wealthy customer base, providing more higher quality products, but still at a more affordable price.

What Stores Are Owned By Walmart?

Walmart owns a vast majority of companies worldwide, such as Asda in the UK and Seiyu in Japan. Both are highly popular chains in their respective countries.

Walmart also owns Bonobos, an apparel brand that they purchased in 2017, and Moosejaw, which specializes in outdoor recreational gear, also purchased in 2017.

Who Owns Walmart?

Walmart is currently owned by the Walton family, heirs of Walmart founder Sam Walton. The company is currently publicly traded. The family owns over 50% of the company’s overall shares.

The family manages their shares via their firm Walton Enterprises LLC, and Walton Family Holdings Trust.

To learn more about both companies, you can see our posts on Dollar General statistics, Walmart statistics, and if Walmart is a franchise.

Conclusion

No. Dollar General is not currently owned by Walmart, and is instead owned by a Private Equity firm. Walmart does own a few brands across the world, including Asda and Seiyu, but they do not own the Dollar General brand.
