What Is Meijer’s Employee Bereavement Policy?
Meijer’s bereavement policy revolves around bereavement leave, which is given to eligible employees based on how they relate to the deceased.
An eligible employee is one who has completed 90 days of service at Meijer.
Additionally, the paid leave days for losing a core family member are more than those of peripheral family members or friends.
It is the employee’s duty whose family member has died to inform the immediate supervisor or manager in charge of such an occurrence.
Furthermore, the supervisor or manager will grant the leave as soon as possible.
In the event an employee requires additional days to the stipulated leave days, the supervisor can grant them, but they will be unpaid.
In addition, if an employee receives news about the loss of a core family member while at work, they are entitled to a day off with immediate effect.
In that case, they will be paid for that days’ work hours, which do not count as part of the bereaved leave days.
The amount to be paid each day of the bereavement leave is the fringe day amount.

- Meijer employees receive a three-day paid leave for losing a core family member. The core family member, in this case, is your spouse, parent, or child.
- If the deceased is the employee’s brother, sister, step-parent, your spouse’s parent, or child, the bereavement leave is two days.
- In case the deceased is an employee’s grandchild, grandparent, brother, or sister to their spouse, they will receive one leave day.
Will Meijer Offer A Paid Time Off To Attend A Friend’s Burial?
Meijer employees are not given paid time off to attend a friend’s burial. However, if you have not exhausted your ten-day yearly paid time off, you can request some time off.
In case that is not applicable, you can request your supervisor for permission to attend the burial with no pay.
Will Meijer Pay Pre-retirement Death Benefits To Surviving Spouse?
If a Meijer employee passes on before receiving their pension, then the surviving spouse has the right to receive it from Meijer on their behalf.

- Have ten years minimum of vested service at Meijer.
- Worked for Meijer past retirement age
- Have a minimum of 5 vested years
Furthermore, the surviving spouse receives 50% of your benefits and 50% survivor annuity.
To qualify for 100% survivor annuity, the deceased must have been employed by Meijer at the time of their death and had attained early retirement age.
Does Meijer Offer Any Death Benefits?
Unfortunately, Meijer does not offer any death benefits at the moment. However, in case of an employee’s demise, the beneficiaries are eligible for scholarships and pensions.
However, children of former Meijer employees can benefit from the Scholarships, while the spouses can benefit from the deceased pension plan.
The beneficiary of your pension can receive the death benefits in a lump sum, except if you began receiving your pension after 2002.
Does Meijer Offer Lump-Sum Death Benefits?
Meijer can offer lump-sum death benefits to a surviving spouse if the monthly benefits are below $5000.
If the monthly benefits exceed $5000 but not more than $15000, the spouse can request a lump sum instead of receiving the amount monthly.
However, an amount exceeding $15000 is not possible to pay as a lump sum.
