However, what if you’re not satisfied with a pet or pet supply purchased from PetSmart and want to return it? Don’t worry, here is everything I’ve found out about PetSmart’s return policy!
PetSmart Return Policy In 2022
PetSmart accepts returns for items in good condition, with the deduction of shipping, gift wrap, and other additional costs, as of 2022. Customers typically have 60 days to return products purchased online or in-store with valid proof of purchase. Note that live pets can only be returned within 14 days.

What Is PetSmart’s Return Policy For Live Animals?
If you have purchased live animals from PetSmart such as snakes, iguanas, hamsters, and similar animals, you can return them to PetSmart within 14 days after the purchase.
To be eligible for a return at PetSmart, you will need to bring back the animal, as well as your receipt and other paperwork or relevant information received at the time of purchase.
Note that if your animal died after the purchase from PetSmart, you can also return it with evidence for a refund.
Additionally, you will need to bring a valid state-issued photo ID for your PetSmart return and must return your animal to the PetSmart store you purchased it from.
What Is PetSmart’s Return Policy For Fish?
Similar to live animals, PetSmart will give you 14 days to return fish to its stores, along with the receipt and a valid government-issued photo ID.
Keep in mind that if you are returning a deceased fish, you will still need to bring the fish to the store you purchased it from, as well as a water sample for PetSmart to test.
Can I Return An Item Without The Box At PetSmart?
PetSmart has stated that to be eligible for a return, items must be in the original packaging.
So, if you do not have the box at PetSmart, it is possible that you will be denied a return.
Note that returns without the box will be accepted at the PetSmart manager’s discretion if they feel you are eligible and have good reason to be issued a return.
Can I Return Opened Items To PetSmart?
You can return opened items to PetSmart as long as they are in the original packaging they were purchased in.
For example, if you purchased dog food and opened it but wish to return it, PetSmart will let you exchange the dog food for a different brand.
However, you will only have 14 days to return opened items to PetSmart, compared to the regular 60 days for unopened items.
Can I Return An Item Or Animal Without The Receipt To PetSmart?
PetSmart requires a receipt to allow you to return items for monetary value.
If you do not have your receipt and wish to make a return at PetSmart, you will need to bring the item and a valid form of government-issued photo ID to the store.
After verifying your identity, PetSmart will issue you a merchandise return card that can only be used at PetSmart.
However, if you do not have a receipt and wish to make an exchange, any outstanding balance will be returned to you in the original form of payment, such as cash or card.
Can PetSmart Look Up My Receipt?
If you are registered with the PetSmart Treats Rewards program, it will be possible to see and track your recent orders, making it easier to return items without a receipt.
With the PetSmart Treats Rewards program, you can access your entire rewards system at PetSmart online, including all your previous orders.
Can I Return Chewy Items To PetSmart?
Unfortunately, PetSmart does not accept returns on Chewy items as of 2022.
While Chewy was previously owned by Petsmart, the two businesses are now run separately from one another and often times sell different products.
Can I Return Damaged Items To PetSmart?
If you purchase a damaged item from the PetSmart store or online, you are eligible for a return or exchange.

However, note that you have 30 days after delivery or 60 days after an in-store purchase to return your item to PetSmart if it is damaged or defective.
What Are The PetSmart Return Exceptions?
There are some products at PetSmart that cannot be returned even if they are in unopened and new condition, and if you have a receipt, including:
- Electronic products such as training items, collars, and fencing
- Grooming tools
- Non-prescription medication or vitamins for pets
- Filters or pumps
How Do I Return PetSmart Purchases To A Store?
To return your PetSmart purchases to a store, simply bring the item, the receipt, and your method of payment to the checkout counter to receive a refund or exchange.
Although you can return items to any PetSmart store, you will need to bring live animals and fish to the same store you purchased them from to make a return.
How Do I Return Online PetSmart Purchases?
If you have purchased an item from PetSmart online, there are several ways you can return it for a refund or exchange.
Return To Store
If you have purchased an order online, you can return it to your local PetSmart store for a refund or exchange.
PetSmart offers an online store locator to help you find a location close to you, or you can contact them to ask on (888) 839-9638.
Note that you will need the item in the original packaging, with the packing slip or shipping confirmation in lieu of a receipt.
Additionally, you will also need the card you used to make the payment in order to receive a refund, as it will be credited to the same card.
If you do not have the card used to make the PetSmart online order, or you paid via an online system such as PayPal, you will be given a merchandise return card instead.
The merchandise return card at PetSmart cannot be redeemed for cash and can only be used at PetSmart.
Return By Mail
You can also return your PetSmart online orders by mail, although you will be liable to pay for the return shipping.
To return your PetSmart online order, you must pack it securely and include the packing slip, ensuring to make a copy for your record.
Make sure to use a traceable and insurable method of shipping and attach your PetSmart return shipping label.
You will not be able to exchange your PetSmart online purchase via mail, as it is only eligible for return.
How Will I Receive The Refund For My Return At PetSmart?
You will receive your PetSmart refund via the same method of payment you used to purchase the item.
So if, for example, you purchased an item with cash, you will be refunded in cash on the spot in-store.
Note that if you purchased your PetSmart item with a check, you may need to wait for 10-days after purchase to receive a refund, either by cash or a merchandise return card.
Additionally, if you purchased a PetSmart item with a credit card, the amount you paid will be returned to your credit card when you make the return.
However, if you purchased a PetSmart item using a debit card, you will be refunded in cash.
You must have the same card you used at the time of purchase to be eligible for a monetary refund, and if you don’t, you will be issued a merchandise return card.
