Target, one of the largest retail chains in the U.S., sells a huge variety of products in-store and online, including a wide range of video games and consoles.
However, what if you are not satisfied with a video game you bought from Target and want to return it? Here is everything I’ve found out about Target’s video game return policy!
Target Video Game Return Policy
Target will accept returns of unopened and unused video games for Xbox, PS4, PS5, Wii, and Nintendo Switch within 30 days of purchase. You must bring the original receipt and a valid photo ID for a full refund. Target RedCard holders can return video games within 60 days.
If you want to know more about returning opened video games, returning items without a receipt, and how to get a longer return time at Target, keep on reading!
How Strict Is Target’s Return Policy For Video Games?
While the regular return policy for Target allows 90 days for opened and unopened products to be returned, Target’s Electronics Returns policy is more strict than that.
Under this different policy, video games and consoles must be returned to a Target store within 30 days in unopened and unused condition for a full refund.
Additionally, if you do not have your receipt, you can be denied an exchange.
However, many store workers have noted on online forums that this decision is at the discretion of the individual store manager, who may occasionally offer exchanges.
How Do I Return Video Games Bought In A Target Store?
You can return unopened video games to any Target store for a full refund or exchange within 30 days (with no stocking fees) if you have the original receipt.
Other than that, you will also need to bring the original method of payment and a valid form of government-issued photo ID for verification.
For in-store returns, Target Guest Services will be able to assist you with the returns process.
Alternatively, you can schedule a return of your item by calling the Target Guest Services Team on 1-800-591-3869.
Here are the typical waiting times for refunds, depending on the mode of payment you used to purchase your video game or console:
- Third-party credit card – 1 to 3 days
- Target RedCard – 1 to 2 days
- Cash – 1 to 2 days
Moreover, requesting a Target refund through an Online Return Centre may take up to 5 days to process.
How Do I Return Video Games Purchased On Target.com?
Video games and consoles purchased on Target.com can be returned to any store along with any of the following items:
- Original receipt
- Barcode found in the Target app
- Target delivery or shipping confirmation email
- Original form of payment
Another way of returning video games purchased at Target.com is through the mail.
You can do this by logging in to your Target.com account, finding the item in the order history section, and selecting the option to return it.
You will be required to give your reason for the return and be redirected to the return shipping label, which you should print and attach to the item before posting it to the address on the label.
Note that when sending the item via mail, you will have to cover the shipping fees unless Target made a mistake in shipping.
Additionally, some items are only returnable in-store and cannot be mailed back to the Target Online Returns Centre.
Also, you will be notified of this when you visit Target.com to start the returns process.
Can I Return Video Games To Target Without A Receipt?
You can return video games to Target without a receipt if you can provide alternative proof of purchase.
Target will be able to track your order if you paid using any of the following methods:
- Target REDcard
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- Discover
- Personal check
- Target gift card (which you must have retained)
If you bought the game online, you can access the digital barcode or receipt from your Target.com account to prove your purchase.
However, if you are unable to provide any proof of purchase, you will be refunded with a ‘merchandise return card’.
This is only valid in-store at Target, and cannot be redeemed online at Target.com.
Can I Return Video Games To Target After 30 Days?
You can return video games to Target after 30 days, but you will not receive a full refund.
Instead, you will be given the equivalent of the item’s lowest price in the last 90 days to a merchandise gift card, which can only be used in-store.
Some video games and consoles will have modified return windows (enforced by the manufacturers) which will be noted on the receipt, the website, or similar information sources.
Additionally, if you paid using the Target RedCard, you will have an additional 30 days to return the video games to Target, i.e. you will have 60 days after purchase instead of 30 (see below for more info).
Can I Return Opened Video Games To Target?
Unfortunately, opened video games cannot be returned to Target.
However, they can be exchanged in-store for the same title, or for the same or different gaming platform.
For example, if you accidentally bought a game for the PS4 (while originally intending to buy a PS5 game) and did not realize this until you opened it, you will be able to exchange it for the PS5 version.
Moreover, if the original video game title is out of stock, it can be exchanged for a different title of the same value. Note that this does not apply to digitally downloaded Target games.
Can I Return A Digitally Downloaded Game To Target?
Unfortunately, you cannot return or exchange digital downloads for video games purchased from Target on any of the platforms.
Target offers digital gaming for the platforms Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, and PC, allowing you to keep games for your consoles online in a video library.
Once you purchase a digital title, you are emailed a digital code that you can redeem to access the game.
Can I Return A Gaming Gift Card To Target?
You cannot return any specialty, pre-paid, or entertainment gift cards (including gaming gift cards) or redeem them for cash or credit at Target, except in locations where it is permitted by law.
Target offers a variety of enhancements for video games and consoles such as gift cards, subscription cards, game add-ons, and in-game currency.
Can I Return Damaged Video Games At Target Without A Receipt?
You cannot return video games that are opened or damaged and brought in without a receipt for a refund or exchange at Target.
How Do I Get A Longer Returns Window?
Target offers its Target RedCard holders an additional 30 days return window on almost all items, including video games and consoles, when used for purchase.
For example, if you bought an Xbox with your Target RedCard, you would have 60 days to return it to the store with the receipt for a full refund.
Target RedCards can be applied online and offer members bonuses such as a 5% discount, free shipping, and exclusive deals on a variety of items.
